Of all the tools I have as a teacher, I'm most grateful for the time I spent in my house, alone on my mat practicing #warrior2 & #downdog. I started my #yoga practice with the #Bikram sequence, which doesn't include any official warrior poses or even downward facing dog. These are key poses in Vinyasa yoga and I found these poses unbelievably arduous in the beginning- I couldn't believe that even after surviving Bikram's nightmarish #awkwardpose holds in a 105 degree room I could still be brought to my knees by a foundation standing pose…WITHOUT ANY EXTRA HEAT INVOLVED. In my moments of struggle, when I thought “I JUST DON'T KNOW ABOUT THIS YOGA BULLSHIT WHY AM I DOING THIS”, I would remind myself of how awesome it is to try. Even if you fall down- just give it a shot. Day after day, showing up for the honor of falling on my face. Because falling on my face or sinking to my knees felt SO MUCH BETTER when I actually gave myself the opportunity to TRY. I mean, how often do you stop short of a goal because you fear failure? Or because you think something will be “hard”? Honestly, who cares if it's hard- doesn't it feel good to just give yourself a chance? So many of you have asked for help with starting a #yoga practice from scratch, especially if you're self-conscious about practicing in a room full of people. There are people who will continue to push you into a physical studio, but I've seen/experienced too much unintentional yet ubiquitous judgement at the hands of students and instructors to seriously expect a different outcome for all of you. I'm a big fan of online yoga classes- I think they are an awesome way to solidify a practice without the distractions of a group class. If you've never practiced yoga before, check out my beginner yoga classes on @streamyoga- There are definitely moments which will challenge you, both physically and mentally. That's good- challenges are good. FALLING DOWN is good. I believe in you, and I believe in your ability to find a strong practice for yourself. Trust me- if I can do it, so can you. Working towards a straight leg #headstand has been an incredible process for me. When I started working on headstand (nearly 2 years ago), I was very naive to the body and soul conditioning required of this pose. It's not about standing on your head or mimicking another person's photo- you have to get past those thoughts in order to even practice the pose. It requires time and dedication- and both in spades. If you can offer both of these tenders, you will be able to eventually headstand. But don't try to use ego as a form of payment unless you want to bust your ass repeatedly. If you're really focusing on #inversions and you need a push in the right direction, I would recommend core and shoulder strengthening poses. But often the best answer is the most simple one- hold #plankpose. For varying durations. Play music and just hang out in the pose. Understand the core engagement. You will feel fire and trembles and sweat and that's fine- that's the point. Find comfort in discomfort and it'll make all the difference. Y'all, we've got to stop making #yoga so competitive. Every time one of us makes a comment comparing our asana practices and shaming ourselves by saying another practitioner's pose progress is “better” than our own, we just continue to sow the seeds of negative body elitism. I blame that attitude for the current predicament of Western yoga & I charge us all w/ the responsibility to leave it as far in the past as humanly possible. How can we possibly spread this beautiful practice if we're constantly talking shit about ourselves in the process? Y'all, I've fallen into the beautiful world of @codyapp and @meghancurrieyoga is the new love of my life. My boo @wanderingwill named her as one of his teacher inspirations during our #ytt at @ashevilleyogacenter and the name stuck with me- especially because Will's #armbalance game is so damn dreamy & I wanted to know the keys to his progress. I'm following the plans in Meghan's “Power Medicine” bundle and her approach is so dope- it's a slower pace than my practice typically takes, but the heart openings make me feel like I'm cranking open parts of my body that have been closed for decades. She's just so..agh, I can't. If I talk about it anymore I'll probably sound like a potential stalker. She's the fucking bomb. Sometimes all it takes is a new teacher to stimulate your practice, and I'm so grateful for the new challenges presented by this delicious approach to yoga. Btw, hey new followers!
